What is a Roc? A "Roc" is a creature from Greek Mythology. It is a cross-bred between a snake and an eagle. According to the Greeks, it was the largest animal to ever fly and was so big that when it flew its wings blocked out the sun. This was the way the Greeks explained solar eclipes.
This piece was commissioned by Frank Davenport of Tulsa Oklahona. This is a perfect example of the type of work I do when the client just let me go wild and do whatever I want to do. Thanks Frank for taking a leap of faith. The Banjo is being made for Frank by Rob at Bishline Banjos.
Here is what Frank had to say about the inlay, "It is a pleasure working with someone who has the artistic ability to see what something is going to look like before it is done. Cliff is a true artist and craftsman and gentleman. I pretty much left it up to him to design a inlay that is quite different than the norm. Boy, did he do that. I would have never thought of a "ROC" as a inlay pattern for a Banjo, but I am very impressed. Not only with the quality of the work, but his artistic talent. This inlay comes off of the neck right at you. Anyone needing inlay work can rest assure this man does a great job? He will be doing some more for me soon. Good job Cliff !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
The inlay is made from White/Gold/Black Mother of Pearl, Blue Paua, Green Ripple, Angora, Pink Heart, 10,000 year old Mastadon Ivory, Malichite, and Silver.
|This small inlay will go around the 3rd fret.|
